In April and May of 2019, San Francisco Chronicle and Essence Magazine both featured articles that outline how important SisterWeb is to San Francisco given the city’s disparate and alarming rates of Black maternal and infant mortality. The articles also uplift my own journey in becoming a mother and doula -- two aspects of my life that continue to inspire me to lead SisterWeb and design programs that help mothers and families navigate pregnancy, birth, and parenthood. I am honored and humbled to share my story, and I hope it continues to motivate others to join in our timely work.
El Tecolote, the longest-running Spanish/English bilingual newspaper in California, ran a feature on SisterWeb’s Telar de Comadres program in May. Telar de Comadres focuses on building a network of Spanish speaking Latina doulas and serving Latinx families during pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. The article highlights the powerful partnership between SisterWeb, San Francisco General Hospital, and Mission Neighborhood Health Center to address the community need for pregnancy and birth support and tackle disparate rates of preterm birth in Latinx families.
Last year, the San Francisco Board of Supervisors' decision to support SisterWeb received attention from KTVU and CBS SF Bay Area. The press conference where former San Francisco City Supervisor Malia Cohen announced funding and partnership with SisterWeb to address pregnancy and birth disparities was a historic moment for our community and organization.
