Help build and lead the doula workforce transforming Black maternal health in San Francisco.

SisterWeb is a San Francisco community doula network that centers and uplifts Black families in their reproductive journey, so they welcome their children with respect, dignity, joy, and pride. Our work advances birth equity and justice through culturally congruent, community-based doula care.

$28.82 per hour.

This is a grant-funded position and contingent on continued funding.

What You’ll Do

The Web Doula provides culturally responsive, relationship-centered community doula care to pregnant, birthing, and postpartum families throughout the San Francisco Bay Area. SisterWeb operates a community doula program alongside additional training and collaborations across its network. As part of SisterWeb’s expanded care model, Web Doulas increase the organization’s capacity to deliver high-quality doula services to families of all racial and ethnic backgrounds while advancing birth justice, health equity, and respectful maternity care. Web Doulas provide prenatal, labor, birth, and postpartum support using evidence-based, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive practices, supporting families across diverse communities based on organizational need while practicing within the same high standards of community-based doula care. Working collaboratively with Lead Doulas and the broader SisterWeb team, the Web Doula ensures clients receive coordinated, compassionate care that honors each family’s goals, autonomy, and lived experiences. The ideal candidate is an experienced community doula who values flexibility while remaining connected to a mission-driven organization committed to transforming maternal health outcomes.

Doula This position works in partnership with Lead Doulas and the Doula Hub Coordinator to coordinate client care while retaining individual responsibility for direct service delivery and documentation.

Essential Functions

Community Doula Care

• Accept and manage client assignments based on organizational need, caseload availability, and employee availability.

• Provide culturally responsive prenatal, labor, birth, and postpartum doula services to assigned clients.

• Build trusting, relationship-centered partnerships with clients throughout pregnancy, birth, and the postpartum period.

• Deliver evidence-based childbirth education, labor preparation, comfort measures, and emotional support.

• Support clients in developing individualized birth goals and preparing for labor, postpartum recovery, infant feeding, and newborn care.

• Provide continuous labor support from active labor through the immediate postpartum period.

• Conduct postpartum visits that address physical recovery, emotional wellness, infant care, feeding support, resource navigation, and family adjustment.

• Practice trauma-informed, strengths-based care that centers client autonomy, informed consent, dignity, and self-determination.

• Accompany clients to prenatal, postpartum, pediatric, specialty, or other healthcare appointments when appropriate.

• Promote client self-advocacy while fostering respectful collaboration with healthcare providers.

• Participate in SisterWeb’s Champion Dyad Initiative (CDI) and other healthcare partnership activities as assigned.

• Support discharge planning and connect families with community-based resources and services.

• Identify client needs and facilitate referrals to internal programs or external community partners.

Birth Support & On-Call Responsibilities

Maintain on-call availability for assigned clients according to SisterWeb policies.

• Provide timely phone, text, and in-person support during early labor, active labor, birth, and the immediate postpartum period.

• Communicate promptly with the Doula Hub Coordinator regarding labor progress, births, emergencies, scheduling changes, or client concerns.

• Provide backup birth support for other SisterWeb doulas when requested and available. 

• Maintain readiness to travel throughout San Francisco and surrounding service areas for births and client visits.

Documentation & Care Coordination

Complete all client documentation accurately, thoroughly, and within required timelines.

• Maintain confidential client records in accordance with organizational policies, Medi-Cal requirements, and funder expectations.

• Document client interactions, assessments, referrals, birth outcomes, and postpartum services.

• Participate in quality improvement efforts, evaluations, surveys, interviews, and program reporting activities.

• Collaborate with Lead Doulas and other staff to coordinate wraparound services and interdisciplinary care.

Organizational Collaboration

Participate in required staff meetings, training, reflective practice sessions, orientations, and continuing education.

• Represent SisterWeb professionally in hospitals, clinics, community organizations, and public events.

• Participate in outreach activities, educational events, and community engagement opportunities as assigned.

• Maintain positive working relationships with healthcare providers, community partners, and SisterWeb colleagues.

• Contribute to organizational learning, continuous quality improvement, and program development.

• Other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience, Education & Certificates

• High school diploma or equivalent required.

• Birth/labor doula certification or equivalent community-based doula training required.

• Experience supporting a minimum of five births.

• Experience providing community-based doula services preferred.

• Experience working with diverse communities and families impacted by health inequities. • CPR certification preferred.

• Familiarity with reproductive justice and community doula models.

• Must have legal authorization to work in the United States.

• Background check required.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Strong understanding of pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum recovery, infant feeding, and community-based doula practice.

• Ability to build trusting relationships across diverse communities. •

Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.

• Strong organizational, time management, and documentation skills.

• Ability to work independently while remaining connected to a collaborative team.

• Experience using Google Workspace, virtual meeting platforms, and electronic documentation systems.

• Familiarity with Compyle, Asana, or similar platforms preferred.

• Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, reproductive justice, and birth justice principles.

Work Environment

This position is based in a combination of client homes, hospitals, birth centers, community settings, SisterWeb offices, and virtual environments. The role requires travel throughout San Francisco and surrounding service areas. Evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday availability is required to support births and client needs.

Physical Requirements

Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds.

• Ability to stand, walk, kneel, bend, squat, and move continuously during labor support, which may extend beyond 12 hours.

• Ability to provide physical comfort measures, including counterpressure, positioning assistance, and rebozo techniques.

• Ability to remain in hospital, birth center, or home environments for prolonged periods.

• Ability to travel throughout the service area at varying hours, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.

• Ability to communicate effectively in person, virtually, and by phone.

• Ability to operate standard office equipment and technology, including smartphones, laptops, and documentation systems.
